Armeniko Monastery of Saint Makariou (Sourp mankar)

This historic structure is the only Armenian monastery on the island and is hidden within the verdant Pentadaktylos mountain range. It was originally founded by Copts around 1000 AD before it passed to the Armenian community and was converted into an important spiritual center, where precious religious manuscripts were kept. After the events of 1974 the complex was abandoned, with the result that today mainly ruins of the two-story structures and its two chapels survive.
