Cave of Saint Barbara

This very small underground place of worship is located in the seaside area of Amathus in Agios Tychonas, a stone's throw from the modern chapel of the same name. The cave consists of two chambers that communicate with each other and is surrounded by the ruins of an ancient early Christian basilica and a small monastic community. It is an exceptionally contemplative hesychasterion that attracts passers-by and faithful who descend the steps to light a candle. Owing to its unique archaeological nature and its limited dimensions, it functions exclusively as a historic place of pilgrimage.
