Church of Archangel Michael

This impressive church is the historic patron and cathedral church of occupied Kyrenia, built upon an older bastion of the city walls. It is distinguished by its elaborate wood-carved iconostasis and the magnificent bell tower that was added at the end of the 19th century. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was plundered and converted by the occupation authorities into an icon museum, depriving the displaced faithful of the possibility to hold their services and sacraments there.
