Church of Holy Forerunner (St John the Baptist)

This is the large and historic central church of the occupied village of Gypsou in the Famagusta district. It is an impressive stone building with a tall bell tower that was the religious center of the entire community. After the Turkish invasion and the violent displacement of the residents in 1974, the church remained silent and plundered for decades; however, in recent years permission is rarely granted through the United Nations for the celebration of occasional festal services by the refugee residents.
