Church of Panagia Chrysospiliotissas

This unique cave-church-hermitage is carved into a steep rock of sandstone in Kato Deftera, right next to the banks of the Pedieos River. In order for the pilgrim to reach the interior of the cave, which was appropriately formed with arches and a narthex, he must climb a large exterior staircase with more than one hundred steps. Although its original wall paintings have been almost completely destroyed by the moisture, the space is one of the most popular and devout religious destinations of the Nicosia district.
