Church of Saint Irene

This historic church is the central church of the eponymous occupied community in the Kyrenia district, which is built at a short distance from the bay of Morphou. It is a traditional stone structure of the single-aisled basilica type, which was built during the nineteenth century to serve the worship needs of the village, very close to the world-famous archaeological site with the thousands of clay figurines. After the events of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the Greek residents were violently driven out and the church was cut off from its Christian flock, remaining for decades a silent witness to the rich religious heritage of the area.
