Holy Church of Panagia Chrysopolitissa

This imposing church is the largest religious space in Famagusta and is located in the district of Kato Varosha. The history of the site is very old, as medieval sources of the 14th century mention the existence of a place of worship in a cave, which originally functioned as an ancient rock-hewn tomb and had a well with holy water. Around 1960, the Orthodox community erected the large modern church over this historic cave, but after the Turkish invasion of 1974 the church was abandoned and remains inaccessible to its displaced faithful.
