Holy Church of Saint Athanasios of Pentaschoinitou (Ruins)

The old settlement of Agios Theodoros was located in the area of Pentaschinos, where Saint Athanasios of Pentaschinos was born and lived. His chapel, built in the 7th century above his tomb, suffered great damage from the earthquakes of 1491. In 2004 the tomb of the Saint and a second one, probably of his father, were revealed, as well as underground tunnels that led toward the settlement and the sea. The pilgrimage site was important owing to the many miracles of the Saint, while his memory is now honored on the 10th of July. In recent years the feast is celebrated in the ruins of the church, where his icon is transported.
