Holy Church of Saint George of Exorinou

This historic church is located on the western side of the walled medieval city of Famagusta and was originally built around 1360 by wealthy Nestorian merchants. The structure follows Gothic architecture with groin vaults and preserves in its interior rare wall paintings that bear Syriac inscriptions. During the period of Ottoman rule it was used as a stable for camels, while in 1905 it was ceded to the Orthodox community, taking the name "Exorinos" owing to the popular tradition that held Saint George to drive away every evil. Although its regular operation ceased in 1956 owing to the intercommunal disturbances, since 2013 the celebration of special religious services is permitted from time to time.
