Holy Church of Saint John

This modern, large parish church was erected in 1960 according to the plans of the mainland Greek architect G. Nomikos, replacing the old historic little monastery of 'Ai-Yiannis of Kourratha'. The church lies within the fenced-off area of Varosha, and after its abandonment in 1974 it was used for some years by the occupation authorities as an icon museum, housing rare relics of the 18th century. Today, although it lies in an accessible zone near the entry limits, its religious use remains forbidden, so that no sacraments or services are held there.
