Holy Church of Saint Prokopios

This majestic church is the main church and patron shrine of the occupied village of Syngrasi in the Famagusta district. It is an exceptionally important monument, built with roughly hewn poros stones upon the remains of an early Christian basilica of the sixth century, from which valuable marble elements and sections of ancient flooring were preserved. Architecturally it belongs to the type of the transitional cross-in-square domed church, and until 1974 it was the centre of the second largest trade fair of the district. Owing to the Turkish occupation, access is limited, although works were recently scheduled for its maintenance and protection from the wear of time.
