Holy Church of Saint Stratigou (Michail)

This picturesque little church was erected in the middle of the 20th century on the spot where an earlier simple roofed structure that housed the icon of Archangel Michael once stood. The church is inextricably linked with a special local tradition: the inhabitants believed that the Holy Commander had the miraculous ability to help infants to 'enlist', that is, to gain strength in their legs so as to walk. For this reason, mothers would bring their babies, sit them on a particular stone outside the church and urge them to take their first steps, while leaving votive offerings and financial contributions.
