Holy Church of Transfiguration

This majestic and spacious church was erected in the middle of the twentieth century to meet the growing needs of the faithful, as the old 13th-century Byzantine little church was no longer sufficient. It is an imposing edifice of the three-aisled basilica type with a large dome, which dominates the centre of the community of Sotira, Famagusta. Its interior is richly decorated with modern hagiographies and has an elaborate wood-carved iconostasis, being the main worship and spiritual core of the parish. In the large paved courtyard of the church, great cultural events of the community are traditionally organised every year, such as the established taro-tasting evening (kolokasi).
