Holy Monastery of Panagia Apsinthiotissa

This is the katholikon of one of the most remarkable monasteries of the Middle Byzantine period in Cyprus, built on a natural platform on the southern side of Pentadaktylos near the village of Sichari. The church presents a unique hexagonal architectural structure on the island, while its name is traditionally connected with the wormwood plant that thrives in the area. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the monastic complex was abandoned and savagely plundered, with the result that many of its rare wall paintings were stolen and sold illegally abroad.
