Holy Monastery of Saint Barbara

This historic structure is the remaining katholikon of an old monastery that is located to the north of Argaka and its founding dates back to Byzantine times. The monastery was left desolate after the events of 1821, when its last abbot, the national martyr Sophronios, was slaughtered by the Ottomans. In the renovated stone-built church the original southern wall is preserved incorporated, while at a nearby location gushes a traditional holy spring (agiasma), known as the "fountain of the monk."
