Monastery of Panagia Eleousas (Ruins)

This historic monastic complex is located near Rizokarpaso and functioned for centuries as an important dependency (metochi) of the venerable Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai. While the rest of the monastery's buildings, made of bricks and mud, were completely destroyed after their abandonment, the double-aisled church of the Virgin Mary was saved thanks to its sturdy stonework. Its architectural style presents a rare mixture of Byzantine arches and strong Gothic arches, with the decoration of the southern entrance standing out for its elegance. After the independence of the island, the management of the site passed to the committee of the Apostle Andrew, remaining today a silent, occupied witness of the Sinaitic heritage in Cyprus.
