Monastery of Saint Barnabas

This historic monastic complex is located near ancient Salamis and Engomi in Famagusta, being one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Cyprus, as it was founded on the spot where the Apostle Barnabas was buried. The present structure is a three-aisled basilica with domes, which was rebuilt in the mid-18th century upon the ruins of older churches. After the events of 1974 and the displacement of the monks, the monastery was converted by the occupation authorities into a museum of icons and archaeological finds, remaining inactive for the celebration of free Christian sacraments.
