Palios Church of Transfiguration

This exceptionally important Byzantine church is located near the centre of Sotira, Famagusta, within the old cemetery of the community. It is a single-space structure with a dome, made of roughly hewn poros stones, which presents unique architectural proportions of length and height with particularly low arches. Inside it, rare and valuable wall paintings dating from the second half of the thirteenth century are preserved fragmentarily, being the object of international scholarly study. The church is considered one of the most important historic jewels of the area, exuding a deeply contemplative atmosphere to visitors.
