Panagia Eleousa

This majestic church dominates the centre of the mountain settlement and is a symbol of the religious heritage of Pitsilia. It was erected in the early twentieth century upon the ruins of the historic monastery of Megas Agros, indeed preserving the original Holy Altar of the monastery. Externally it is entirely clad with local stone, while it has an imposing dome and a tall, elaborate bell tower. Inside it is kept the miraculous icon of the same name, which according to tradition was brought to the island by persecuted monks of Asia Minor.
