Panagia Pergamiotissa

This important Byzantine monument is located a few kilometres east of occupied Akanthou, built upon the remains of an older Christian basilica. The church follows the architectural type of the cross-in-square with a dome and took its name from the ancient city of Pergamon that once flourished there. Inside it, it preserved unique wall paintings, which were unfortunately illegally removed by antiquities smugglers after 1974, although part of them was later located and repatriated.
