Saint George

This is the historic church of the occupied community of Avlona in the Nicosia district, which is dedicated to the Great Martyr George. This stone-built structure is a characteristic example of the local church building of the Morphou area, having been closely connected with the life of the displaced residents before 1974. After the Turkish invasion, the church came under occupation and suffered damage, while recently it was included in programs of digital recording and conservation of cultural heritage. Owing to the ongoing occupation and the special conditions that prevail in the village, the space is not accessible for the free celebration of joyous social sacraments.
