Timios the Forerunner

This is the large, historic central church of the occupied village of Gypsou in the Famagusta district. It is an impressive stone edifice with a tall bell tower that was the religious centre of the whole community. After the Turkish invasion and the violent displacement of the inhabitants in 1974, the church remained silent and looted for decades; however, in recent years permission is rarely granted through the United Nations for the celebration of individual festive services by the refugee inhabitants.
