SAINT MAVRI

This is a small and isolated, single-aisled vaulted church located on the occupied peninsula of Karpasia. The building stands out for its distinctive architecture, as it has a horseshoe-shaped semicircular apse and stepped blind arches on its interior walls. Its masonry is entirely constructed of carefully squared limestone blocks of great thickness, a fact that gives the monument a sturdy structure unaltered through time. Owing to the Turkish occupation since 1974, access for the faithful is extremely difficult, with the shrine remaining a silent witness of the Byzantine heritage of the area.
