SAINT GEORGE (RUINS)

This is a historic medieval monument, also known as the Holy Monastery of Saint George Axylou (or Chalasmata), which lies in ruins approximately two kilometres east of the community of Koili in Paphos. The church follows the architectural type of the free cross and preserves in its interior two distinct layers of old Byzantine wall paintings. Owing to the extensive collapse of its roof and its building structure, the site now lacks functional capacity. Today it is an important archaeological and historical stop for walkers, while the memory of the Saint is honoured symbolically by the community.
