SAINT NICHOLAS

This small and historic Chapel of Saint Nicholas is the first Byzantine church one encounters upon entering the community of Galata from the eastern side. It is a rectangular, single-aisled building of mountainous Cyprus, constructed with traditional materials, such as undressed stones and mud. In its interior, despite the ravages of time, precious remnants of 16th-century wall paintings survive on the northern wall depicting the figures of three ascetic monks. Owing to its extremely limited space, the church functions mainly as a quiet religious attraction of the Solea valley and does not lend itself to social sacraments
