SAINT FILON AT AGRITIA (RUINS)

This important religious and archaeological monument rises on the northern coast of Karpasia, built upon the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the fifth century. The existing church belongs to the type of the cross-in-square with a dome and is constructed of visible, roughly cut limestone blocks that lend it a unique historical appearance. As the building is half-ruined and lacks a roof, it now functions exclusively as a protected archaeological site beside the ancient Roman harbour. Owing to the Turkish occupation, the monument remains violently cut off, constituting a silent witness of the first Christian years of the island.
