ARCHANGEL MICHAEL

This historic church is the patron and cathedral church of occupied Yialousa in Karpasia, presenting a unique “twin” structure as a newer building adjoins the original Byzantine monument. In its interior it preserves rare medieval wall paintings of great archaeological and artistic value for the cultural heritage of the island. After 1974 the church remained silent for decades, while in recent years it has undergone restoration works and the celebration of individual services by the displaced residents is rarely permitted.
