BYZANTINE CHURCH
This church of Saint George is located protected within the historic castle of occupied Kyrenia and was originally built as a military chapel of the Byzantine garrison. It is the only example of a four-columned church on the island, as its vaulted roof is supported by four ancient marble columns with Corinthian capitals from an earlier basilica. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was incorporated into the wider museum area of the fortress and remains inactive for the conduct of Christian services and sacraments.
