DAMALOSPILIOS ROCK-CUT ASCETIC CAVES OF HERMITS
In the wild and isolated mountainous area of the Akamas peninsula, near Neo Chorio in Paphos, the hewn ascetic caves of the hermits are found, known as Damalospilios. These are ancient artificial and natural hollows within the rock that were used during the medieval period as spaces of seclusion, prayer and asceticism by monks. Owing to the extensive collapses and the wear from time, the site is not functional for the celebration of sacraments, being an important historical and archaeological monument of the Christian ascetic tradition.
