CHURCH OF ARCHANGEL MICHAEL

This impressive church is the historic patron and cathedral church of occupied Kyrenia, built upon an earlier bastion of the city walls. It is distinguished for its ornate wood-carved iconostasis and the magnificent bell tower that was added at the end of the 19th century. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was looted and converted by the occupying authorities into a museum of icons, depriving the displaced faithful of the possibility of celebrating their services and sacraments there.
