GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH

This historic Greek Orthodox church was the central and largest church of the occupied community of Afaneia on the Mesaoria plain. It is a stone building in the style of a three-aisled basilica, which served the worship needs of the hundreds of Christian residents of the village before their displacement. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was savagely looted, all its sacred vessels and its icons were removed, while the building was converted by the occupying authorities into a Muslim mosque, remaining inaccessible to its lawful faithful.
