HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT IRENE

This imposing church is the pride of the mountain village of Farmakas and is built in the centre of the community with local stone of the area. It follows the architectural type of the three-aisled basilica with a dome and was erected during the 1930s in order to replace an earlier, smaller church. In its interior the historic and miraculous icon of the Great Martyr Saint Irene is kept, which bears visible marks from an old fire and is considered a protectress for ailments of the eyes. The church is a pole of attraction for thousands of faithful from all over the island, particularly during its annual festival on 5 May.
