HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT GEORGE

This picturesque and isolated chapel is located in the wider rural area of occupied Rizokarpaso, being a characteristic example of the local ecclesiastical heritage. It is a single-aisled vaulted structure, which is sturdily built of carefully squared limestone blocks that have withstood the passage of the centuries. The interior of the church was originally decorated with rich Orthodox iconography, of which today only a few fragments survive, leaving the marks of abandonment visible. Owing to the Turkish occupation since 1974, the monument remains violently inaccessible to the majority of the faithful, standing silent within the nature of Karpasia.
