HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT ATHANASIOS OF PENTASCHOINITOU (RUINS)

The old settlement of Agios Theodoros was located in the Pentaschoinos area, where Saint Athanasios the Pentaschoinitis was born and lived. His chapel, built in the 7th century over his tomb, suffered great damage from the earthquakes of 1491. In 2004 the tomb of the Saint was uncovered, along with a second one, probably of his father, as well as underground tunnels that led towards the settlement and the sea. The pilgrimage was important owing to the many miracles of the Saint, while his memory is now honoured on 10 July. In recent years the feast is celebrated in the ruins of the church, where his icon is brought.
