HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT GEORGE

This imposing church is the central parish church of the village of Alona in the mountainous area of Pitsilia. It is a large, three-aisled and timber-roofed basilica, built with the traditional dark local stone of Troodos which gives it a distinctive charm. In its interior exceptional relics are kept and a precious icon of Saint George, which dates from the beginning of the 19th century. Owing to its central position and the unique mountain atmosphere, the church is often chosen for the celebration of weddings and baptisms by residents and by those living abroad
