HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT THEODORE STRATILATOU

The main church of Saint Theodore the Commander is located on the eastern bank of the river Atsas and replaced an earlier church of the Ottoman period. According to tradition, the icon of the Saint returned miraculously to the spot where it was found, leading the residents to build the first church there. The present church was completed in 1916 and is a single-aisled basilica with a double-pitched tiled roof, pointed arches and two entrances. It is built with stone and traditional bricks, while the floor has been covered with mosaic. Around it was the old cemetery and olive groves survive that were a source of income for the church. The memory of the Saint is honoured on 8 February, attracting crowds of faithful from all over Solea.
