HOLY CHURCH OF SAINT NICHOLAS
This imposing building is the most important and most impressive example of French Gothic architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean, having been built during the Lusignan period between 1298 and 1326. In this cathedral the official coronation ceremonies of the Frankish kings of Cyprus as kings of Jerusalem were carried out during the Middle Ages. After the capture of the city by the Ottomans in 1571, the building was converted into a Muslim mosque, its Christian symbols and wall paintings were covered over, while today it functions as the central Lala Mustafa Pasha mosque of occupied walled Famagusta.
