HOLY CHURCH OF APOSTLE LUKE

The Holy Church of the Apostle Luke dominates the heart of Aradippou, constituting the religious and cultural focal point of the area. The history of the site begins around 1700 with a small shrine, which was replaced in 1851 by a larger stone-built church. Owing to the rapid population growth, the old building was demolished and in 1939 the present imposing church in Byzantine style with a dome was raised. In its interior the impressive old gilded iconostasis survives, while the annual festival of the church on 18 October is so important that it has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
