HOLY CHURCH OF EVANGELISTOU LUKE

This historic church is the central and largest church of the occupied community of Spatharikon in the Famagusta district. It is a building that belongs to the type of the single-aisled vaulted basilica of the end of the Ottoman period, a characteristic example of the religious architecture of Mesaoria. After the events of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church was violently cut off from its displaced flock and remained closed for decades, however in recent years rare, moving liturgies are held there by the refugee residents on the occasion of the annual feast of the Evangelist.
