HOLY CHAPEL OF SAINT MARINA

On the eastern side of the village of Asgata, next to the bed of the river Arkosikia, the renovated chapel of Saint Marina rises. At this spot the rubble of a much older church previously existed, where the residents had found the icon of the Saint hidden inside a large clay jar together with a votive lamp. The first modern but unadorned little church was founded in 1937 through the care of the local associations, while in 1952 it received interior additions, such as the iconostasis and the stalls. The radical change came in 1993, when the old building was demolished to be replaced by the present, tasteful church, which follows the architectural type of the single-aisled basilica. The surrounding area has been fully redeveloped with flagstone paving and tree planting, transforming the chapel into a serene spiritual destination. Historically, the area is connected with a holy water spring that gushed forth in the river, where the faithful used to leave votive offerings asking for the protection of Saint Marina.
