CATHEDRAL OF CHURCH OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

This monumental church is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of Gothic architecture in the walled city of Famagusta. It was built during the reign of Peter I with funding from the wealthy merchant Simon Nostrano, who gathered the necessary sum from the profits of a single trading voyage to Syria. The building stands out for its powerful external buttresses and its impressive cross vault. After the Ottoman conquest of 1571 it was converted into a mosque (Sinan Pasha), during the British period it was used as a grain store (earning the popular name “Wheat Mosque”), while today it houses a public library.
