MONASTERY OF PANAGIA ELEOUSA (RUINS)

This historic monastic complex is located near Rizokarpaso and functioned for centuries as an important metochi of the ancient Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai. While the remaining buildings of the monastery, constructed of mudbrick and mud, were completely destroyed after their abandonment, the two-aisled church of the Virgin Mary survived thanks to its sturdy stonework. Its architectural style presents a rare blend of Byzantine vaults and strong Gothic arches, with the decoration of the southern entrance standing out for its elegance. After the independence of the island, the management of the site passed to the committee of the Apostle Andrew, remaining today a silent, occupied witness of the Sinaitic heritage in Cyprus.
