OLD CHURCH OF SAINT RAPHAEL AND BASIL

In the heart of the square of Kalo Chorio Larnaca dominates the old, stone-built little church that is dedicated to Saint Basil and Saint Raphael. The erection of the original single-aisled, vaulted church is placed in the period of the 15th to 16th century, while during the 18th century the building was extended westwards with the addition of a women's gallery. At the beginning of the 21st century radical conservation works were carried out, during which the later addition of the women's gallery was removed in order to restore the original form of the church, while at the same time its old icons were saved and conserved. A noteworthy element of its historicity is its iconostasis, which was transferred intact from the old church of the Saviour in Larnaca. The chapel is a spiritual beacon for the community and holds its festival with full ceremony on 1 January.
