CAVE OF SAINT BARBARA

This very small rock-cut place of worship is located in the coastal area of Amathus in Agios Tychonas, a stone's throw from the homonymous modern Chapel. The cave consists of two chambers that communicate with each other and is surrounded by the ruins of an ancient early Christian basilica and of a small monastic community. It is an extremely devotional retreat that attracts passers-by and faithful who descend the steps in order to light a candle. Owing to its unique archaeological nature and its limited dimensions, it functions exclusively as a historical place of pilgrimage
