TOMB OF SAINT IRAKLEIOU (RUINS)

The site “Agios Irakleios” in Kofinou hosts the remains of an ancient religious centre. The recent archaeological investigations of the University of Cyprus revealed that the medieval single-chamber church (martyrium) was built directly upon the ruins of an earlier, majestic three-aisled basilica of the 7th century. The church bore rich interior decoration with wall paintings, while around it the first organised rural cemetery of the early Christian period in Cyprus was discovered, proving the enduring sanctity and the use of the site through the centuries
