HOLY FORERUNNER

This is the large, historic central church of the occupied village of Gypsou in the Famagusta district. It is an impressive stone building with a tall bell tower that was the religious centre of the entire community. After the Turkish invasion and the violent displacement of the residents in 1974, the church remained silent and looted for decades; however, in recent years permission is rarely granted through the United Nations for the celebration of individual festal services by the refugee residents
