Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

This imposing edifice is the most important and impressive example of French Gothic architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean, having been built during the Lusignan period between 1298 and 1326. In this cathedral, during the Middle Ages, the official coronation ceremonies of the Frankish kings of Cyprus as kings of Jerusalem took place. After the conquest of the town by the Ottomans in 1571, the building was converted into a Muslim mosque, its Christian symbols and wall paintings were covered, and today it functions as the central Lala Mustafa Pasha mosque in occupied, walled Famagusta.
