Church of Holy Forerunner (St John the Baptist)

This remarkable medieval church is located on the southeastern side of the mountainous village of Askas in the Pitsilia area. It is a three-aisled, wooden-roofed basilica which has an impressive interior with two rows of columns that form arches. Its present form was largely shaped during the 18th century with the addition of a new section, while its elegant bell tower was completed at the end of the 19th century. In the interior survive precious samples of ecclesiastical art and wall paintings that date back to the 16th century. The church is fully functional and hosts traditional weddings and baptisms within the picturesque mountainous landscape.
