Church of Panagia

This remarkable double-aisled church is located near Rizokarpaso and was originally the katholikon of a small monastic complex, which functioned as a dependency (metochi) of the renowned Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai. The structure presents an excellent blend of architecture, as it combines Byzantine structural elements with intense Gothic arches that divide the two aisles, while its southern entrance bears elaborate decoration with small columns. Because of the Turkish occupation, the surrounding mud-brick monastic buildings were destroyed, but the church was recently conserved, remaining a precious historic imprint of Christian Karpasia.
