Church of Saint George

This historic church is located in the occupied village of Prasteio of Mesaoria and is a precious architectural monument of the area. The structure bears strong Franco-Byzantine and neo-Gothic elements on its eastern face, while in its interior survive rare wall paintings that date from the 17th century. Because of the Turkish invasion of 1974, the church remained violently closed for decades; however, recently complete conservation works were completed by the bicommunal Technical Committee, allowing the displaced residents to return rarely for pilgrimage.
